Milton Wallace

From The Martial Arts Encyclopedia

Milton Wallace first came to Bullshido's attention with this thread which linked to some of his training videos hosted on YouTube. As is often the case here at Bullshido, there was much mirth to be had at the sight of what has been universally described as “martial LARPing of the highest degree.” Given that the previous assessment represents a highly inflammatory statement; it behooves us, the Bullies, to explain how this conclusion was drawn.

Naturally, we decided to do some digging. Ultimately, we just HAD to know the truth about Wallace's:

  • Rickson-esque fight record of 500-0
  • Claims of training pro athletes and fighters
  • Claims of training at AKA San Jose
  • Claims of training “high-level” government officials
  • Laundry list of styles taught-including “muy tai”

This one didn't take too long! After a whirlwind of phone calls, cross-forum cooperation, threatening e-mails, and a bizarre preponderance of hockey rhetoric, we concluded that:

  • Wallace holds no rank in any style. Furthermore, he is misrepresenting himself as a “sifu.” He certainly does not have such background in Wing Chun, which was the only art in which he "named" his instructors.
  • Wallace has lied about his qualifications, his training location, (post #232) his corporate clients, and his fight record.
  • Wallace is charging money to teach things that he does not have the skill and background to teach; based on the information and videos he has provided. He is guilty of defrauding his clients, if he is selling his services by telling them the same stories that he spouts on-line.
  • His technique, as displayed in the videos posted by Wallace himself on YouTube, is laughably poor.

The main thread, with all the drama, hijinks, and bizarre twists and turns can be found here.

It is best absorbed on a lazy Saturday afternoon with a glass of fine scotch, when you have nothing else to do and you want to practice your "WTF" face. You will laugh, you will cry, you will never watch hockey the same way again!

Milt's Claims

Milton Wallace originally said on his MySpace profile that he is a “MMA trainer/fighter” who trains at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose California. MySpace Link Here. (Since he changes this ad frequently this language may no longer be there when you read it so look at the screen capture.) This is not necessarily a horrific thing. Thanks to the UFC, MMA is developing into a premier athletic event with significant mainstream awareness and participation. It makes sense that instructors would want to offer an MMA program within their curriculum. A quick perusal of his training videos gave some posters at Sherdog some concern, and that subsequently started this investigation.

The items most germane to our investigation were:

  • A Rickson-esque fight record of 500-0
  • Claims of training pro athletes and fighters
  • Claims of training at AKA San Jose
  • Claims of training “high-level” government officials
  • A laundry list of styles taught-including “muy tai”

It is the conclusion of this investigation that:

  • Wallace holds no rank in any style. Furthermore, he is misrepresenting himself as a “sifu.” He certainly does not have such background in Wing Chun, which was the only art in which he "named" his instructors.
  • Wallace has lied about his qualifications, his training location, his corporate clients, and his fight record.

Investigation into Milt's Claims

Fight record

This one was easy. After being probed about his record, Wallace immediately back-tracked claiming that this record was “on the ice,” Implying that these were all hockey fights. There is absolutely no record of any of these fights. Wallace also did not provide any information concerning an alleged fight that was to happen next month in Ireland.

Training pro athletes and fighters

Wallace alludes repeatedly to the professional athletes and fighter’s he has trained. Wallace was unable to produce the name of one pro fighter who he had trained. Further pressure from the bullies resulted in Wallace first claiming that he was a conditioning coach for pro fighters (Which is very disconcerting if you have watched some of his videos) and ultimately, he settled on the story that he only produced and sold “Di da jow” to many pro fighters and that was the extent of his involvement.

In an e-mail response to Bullshido Bully MississippiRed, Wallace responded:

… Those guys on Sherdog can't read because they would have clearly seen that I TRAIN some MMA people in conditioning. The pictures of my bodybuilding prove that I know my shit. I also train professional athletes. See the myspace…

And ultimately, the following:

…My company for that is the Y&W Black Herb Supplement Company. Di da Jow is the Chinese name for these healing herbs, and these herbs heal sprains, cracked bones, sore muscles etc.. These herbs are also part of the secret of true iron palm training because these herbs help strengthen bones, ligaments, and muscle. I can naturally bench press over 500lbs without the use of steroids! Those same guys who are hating against me on Sherdog will be the same people buying my product in the very near future. I have people in all branches of professional sports using this stuff… I also have a contract with the military in training government people to learn some of these styles. Since you are local, I will share this information with you. When I said I worked with cage fighters, I meant to say that I sell healing herbs that help fighters recover from injuries. I learned to make this when I was living in China and Japan. Mike Kyle, Daniel Putter and a few other people have tried and love this stuff.

Wallace also claimed to be a “fight trainer” for various professional sports teams including: San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Raiders back in 2000-2002. (See this post and this post.) As a born and bred northerner, I know how much fighting is part of hockey, so I did not immediately think much of this. However, Bully Seveneleven has significant connections to the world of pro hockey and immediately pointed out that there is no such thing as a “fight trainer” in the NHL. Similarly, Darthsyric, who works in sports radio, similarly had never heard of such a position. It should be noted that it is not unheard of for hockey “enforcers” to solicit instruction on their own time, but it is still a practice frowned upon by the NHL. The existence of a “fight trainer” would imply tacit approval of fighting in the sport of hockey, and no professional organization would risk that type of exposure.

Furthermore, an official response from The San Jose Sharks indicates that no such position as fight trainer ever existed for their organization. The only thing Bullshido could confirm was that Milt had played some college hockey for San Jose State in 1998 and 1999 where he played in eighteen games and was ranked 82 on their all time list of goal scorers.

Claims of training at AKA San Jose

Wallace claimed on his MySpace profile that he trained at AKA San Jose, and it was his “favorite place to train MMA.”

Subsequent investigation proves that Wallace was not a member of that organization, no one there had heard of him, and he did not train MMA there at any point. I wish there was some ninja-like investigatory loophole I could brag about using here, but a simple phone call works wonders sometimes. Wallace later admitted he trained there only rarely, and not in a long time. His MySpace profile was changed shortly after our investigation began. It is possible he trained there once or twice as a guest of someone else. Wallace would not offer any rebuttal to our questions on this matter.

Claims of training “high-level” government officials

Wallace claims to have trained “high level government officials” in self-defense and firearms. In an email to MississippiRed, Wallace says:

I also have a contract with the military in training government people to learn some of these styles. Since you are local, I will share this information with you.

As evidence we have only pictures from his MySpace Profile of him shooting guns with 2 other people. He would not give any other information regarding his involvement in any official capacity with the US government. I would like to point out at this time how many similar pictures there are of me from when I go shooting with my buddies. One of them is even a government employee. This does not mean that I train government officials. It means I go shooting with my buddies sometimes.

Styles and credentials

Wallace claims to teach muay thai (he spells it “muy thai,” or “muy tai”), Hung fa yi wing chun, escrima/kali, iron palm, and boxing. Bullshido newcomer Kelesis was able to track down Garrett Gee, the man with whom Wallace claimed to have trained wing chun. In a phone conversation with Bullshido member Kelesis, Gee at first did not remember Wallace. Kelesis’ report of the conversation is as follows:

I called his Sifu, Garrett Gee of Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Kuern. A guy picked up the phone and I asked him if this was Hung Fa Yi and if he taught Wing Chun Kuern. He replied yes, so I asked him if there was a Milt Wallace Sifu that taught there. He was confused for awhile but said no. He didn’t seem to recognize the name, but then he said "You mean the black guy?" I replied yes. He says "Oh, I haven’t seen Milton in a very long time." I asked him if he was Garrett Gee and he said that he was. I asked him how long did Milt Wallace study with him, and he replied that Milt only practiced with him for "a very short time." I asked him how much did he learn, did he at least learn the first form "siu nim do?" I didn’t understand his response, but he said something about a football coach. He asked "Where I learn about all this?" I replied that his student Milt was challenging people online and threatening to beat them up bad. I also mentioned that Milt claimed he learned the entire Wing Chun system from a Sifu Garrett Gee of San Francisco, and he was using his Wing Chun training to beat up people. Garrett commented that that didn’t sound like the Milton he knew. I told him that Milt was teaching now, and if it wasn’t at his Wing Chun school, then if he knew where. Garrett once again stated he hasn’t seen him in a very long time. He once again asked where I learned about all this, and I replied that he was attracting a lot of attention online. Garrett didn’t know what "online" meant, so I had to explain to him I meant "sur mong" and "mong gee." He demanded to get the address online to this, but I didn’t have the computer on hand at that time. I told him I would email him the website where he could read about it and thanked him for talking to him. I was hanging up but heard him ask where I learned Wing Chun from at the last second. The whole conversation was awkward because he wasn’t too fluent in English, and when I talked partially in Cantonese he would still reply to me completely in English. Garrett also seemed pretty irritated when I was talking to him. I’m sure I was being very rude by being so confrontational about my questions and sort of talking bad things about his "student." Now I’m feeling bad for calling him up and asking him questions anonymously... So that’s basically it. Confirmed that Milt learned some Wing Chun from Garrett Gee, but its unknown exactly how much. He said Milt only practiced with them for a "very short time," but that term is relative to what "short" meant to him. I have a feeling that Milt didn’t learn all his Wing Chun from Garrett Gee. As far as I know, usually people take at least several months before they move on to the next form. I’m not sure it would be proper to email Sifu Garrett Gee a link to sherdog or here, but I really do want him to check out the video of Milt Wallace working on the Wooden Dummy and his Hung Ga stance and hear his comments on it. Milt's Hung Ga stance seemed ridiculously over-spread out, and his Wing Chun techniques on the Wooden Dummy seemed sloppy and unrefined.

Wallace also mentioned Benny Meng. Bully Aarvaarks e-mail inquiry was responded to by Meng in short order with this:

Subject:RE: question concering Sifu Wallace Date:3/20/2007 11:41:21 A.M. US Mountain Standard Time Thank you for your email. The name M Wallace doesn't ring any immediate bells. I did a quick check on youtube through google and don't recognize Milt Wallace at all. I know all the HFY Instructors and most of them are my students. I'm pretty sure this guy doesn't belong to our martial arts family. Sincerely, Sifu Meng

It appears that Wallace’s training in wing chun was cursory at best, and he certainly was not qualified to be a ‘sifu” under Garret Gee. Wallace has offered no other certifications, nor has he responded to this posting by Kelesis at this time. In short, Wallace has provided NO verifiable rankings, certifications, titles, or qualifications to teach any known, formalized style of martial art.

The saga of MississippiRed

In the interests of fair play, as the Sifu Wallace drama unfolded, Bullshido bully MississippiRed, being located in the area, offered to go down and check out a class taught by Wallace, and try to get the opportunity to spar with him. The entire expanse of this interaction is best absorbed by reading the thread, and is too large to be encompassed in this article. But in the interests of clarity, I will sum up the salient points here.

Red initially sent an email to Wallace requesting to check out his class and maybe have a spar. He freely admitted to being from Bullshido, and made it very clear that he was only interested in an objective evaluation of the material. Wallace initially agreed, but was reluctant to commit to a time or place. This seemed strange, and Red persisted (politely) despite the increasing hostility from Wallace. It should be noted that this hostility was fueled heavily by the onslaught of negative comments on both Bullshido and Sherdog about the technical quality of Wallace’s YouTube instruction.

Eventually, Wallace began to insist upon bizarre circumstances for a meeting, such as meeting on a military base, and requiring secret service background checks. Wallace was apparently unaware that people go on and off military bases every day with little more than a driver’s license check, and possibly the searching of their vehicle. Wallace tried to insinuate that he actually taught on said base (to his high-level government agents, no doubt); but an astute Sherdog poster determined the exact street address of his school from land marks and signage viewable in his training videos. Wallace also began to insist that Red spar with “Sifu Ross” or an unnamed MMA fighter that Wallace knew. Finally, in the most bizarre twist, Wallace began to insist that all sparring take place on ice.

Wallace also insisted that anyone who wanted to fight him had to pay $10,000, and later $100,000 for the privilege. After several Sherdoggers remarked on Bullshido’s propensity for actually coming up with the money, and actually sending people to face these challenges, he backed off meeting anyone, citing pressure from his business partners.

It became obvious that there was no way Wallace was going to submit to an objective evaluation by a Bullshido member. Wallace also felt the need to point out that he was licensed to carry a gun, which precluded any serious discussion of a meeting.

It should be noted that this investigation was unique in one aspect: the participation from Wallace himself consisted almost entirely of threatening e-mails and bizarre, almost non-sensical ramblings. Typically, an individual will either dismiss us as inconsequential and claim to be “above” an investigation, or they will try to lie and obfuscate to throw us off. A representative sample of a typical Wallace response to a question or concern is featured in this post:

Last email for you fuck face! Ok man, I am going to make you feel good. I am not going to stoop to your level. I am a real martial artist who has been trained to avoid people like you. You might be a better fighter than me, and if you are, great! I still think I'd beat your little ass (168lbs), but we will never know. Does that make your BIG ego feel better! I still have another good deal for you. Since you think you are so much better than me, why don't you step into my world. I want you to try and fight me on the ice. No problem for a GREAT fighter like you. Right? I have fought and beat some of the toughest guys in the NHL. I was the fight trainer for the Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks, Montreal Canadiens, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The toughest guy in the league is also a good friend of mine. You saw his picture on myspace. I am 100% sure you would be making a big mistake if you did fight me on the ice because I would make respect everything about fighting on the ice. Try me, say $100,000? Can you afford it? Otherwise, I will assume you really aren't a GREAT MMA fighter. Now go own you way little man because class is dismissed. I FUCKING DARE YOU TO FIGHT ME ON THE ICE ANYWHERE! By the way, Sifu Ross is 100 times faster than you, and he was not impressed with your skills. He is only 210lbs, and I FUCKING DARE YOU TO FIGHT HIM! He is a REAL martial artist unlike you. Better than anyone in UFC, Pride or whatever. You will see him on film soon. I am even setting up a meeting with a local MMA fighter. I will tape his beating and post that up too. Make sure your bitch ass puts that up too! See ya and I wouldn't want to be ya! Sifu Ross can also make you cry like a bitch, but he is much more merciful than me! I want to break every fucking bone in your body! How does that last bitch slap feel?LOL Sifu

In response to a post on Sherdog, Wallace PM’d the poster this message:

McRich too! A Bullet shower! Don't forget to tell everyone I am Mc Rich too thanks to you. I don't give a fuck about you or any of those MMA jackasses. I am not a MMA fighter, but I will KICK your ass on the ice. I will beat your ass on a street level if you or any other skin heads approach me. Bullets don't lie! I am always packing, so step up and get shot! I'll shoot any of you fools stepping up! Thats real street talk bitch because you can be shot and killed in this city! Try me bitch! You aren't even worthy of fighting me in a ring. Where is your videos? Yeah, I thought so. You don't have shit! YOUR Sifu!

And this one:

Hey Skin Head! As far as I am concern, you are a skin head! You act like one! I am too busy making money. I just schooled someone from this site too! He was stupid enough to take my on the ice challenge. He lost a lot of blood, and I even stepped on his hands. No fighting for this MMA guy for a while. Nerve damage, facial cuts, and a broken nose to go with it! You want some of that on ice action? I also took his MONEY! I guess that makes me 501-0 instead of 500-0 on the ice! I am the KING there, and I DARE you to meet me there! I'll make sure you lose even more of your Skin Head blood! LOL at your punk ass. Where is your next fight so I can get a front row seat. I'll be the pimp with two fine ass women laughing my ass off at you getting knock the fuck out! LOL! LOL! LOL! I sent a MMA guy to the hospital for many many many stiches! Today was a GREAT day. I am going to party with his money. Stupid fool! Better take some skating lessons bitch if you want to try me! Sifu M

It should be noted that no poster form Sherdog or Bullshido ever actually met Wallace, making the highlighted statements above untrue. I invited Wallace to rebut the things said on the thread, and I requested information from him regarding his certifications and ranking. I have yet to receive any response from Wallace.

Summary

This was an atypical investigation for Bullshido. The only on-line information on Wallace was self-generated, making 3rd party verification tricky. Additionally, I have never had a subject respond to an investigation as erratically and self-destructively as Wallace. The claims he made were easily debunked, and his rebuttals consisted entirely of bizarre, threatening ramblings that did not pertain to the actual questions. It appeared at times that Wallace actually wanted to look bad. In short, unless Wallace calms down and provides some verification of his claims, my conclusions are as follows:

  • Wallace was unable to provide any information concerning rank he may have in any style. Furthermore, he is misrepresenting himself as a “sifu.” He certainly does not have such background in Wing Chun, which was the only art in which he "named" his instructors.
  • Wallace has lied about his qualifications, his training location, his corporate clients, and his fight record.
