The Martial Arts Encyclopedia:Lineage templates

From The Martial Arts Encyclopedia

The roots of common lineages have been made easier to add using templates. This allows for the quicker data entry and uniform formatting across the entire site.

For example, adding {{LineageRigan}} to a page produces this:

« Rigan Machado « Carlos "Carlinhos" Gracie, Jr. « Carlos Gracie, Sr. « Mitsuyo "Conde Koma" Maeda

Using lineage templates

A lineage should list the person's full name, their instructor's name, their instructor's instructor's name, and so on back to Mitsuyo Maeda. Several components are used to accomplish this, including lineage templates.

To insert a lineage template into a page, you'll need to use several elements:

{{PAGENAME}}
A Magic Word that inserts the name of the current profile.
« (right angle quote)
This acts as an arrow showing the flow of the lineage.
[[Instructor's Name]]
The name of their instructor's profile as a wikilink to his profile. You should consider creating a new lineage template if you their instructor has more than one student.
{{LineageName}}
This is where the lineage template is actually called.

Creating a new lineage template

When adding the lineage to a page, you should consider creating a template for their instructor. It can then later be used on all their students profiles.

Using John Q. Gracie from from above as an example, while creating his page you might include this in his lineage:

{{Template:LineageRockey}}

This is a link to a non-existant lineage template for his instructor, Rockey Gracie. Finding no template, the site will instead write a red link like this:

Template:LineageRockey

Following this link will take you to a page where you can edit and create the lineage template. Once it's created, John Q. Gracie's profile will automatically be updated to display it.

The name of the template should be "Template:LineageName", where "Name" is the first, last or nickname (whichever is most descriptive and unique) for the last instructor on the lineage (furthest to the left).

When creating a new template, rather than writing out the entire lineage again, use other lineage templates to generate it. For example, LineageRenzo uses LineageCarlinhos, which itself uses LineageCarlos.

Be sure to add your new lineage templates to their category using this wikitext:

[[Category:Lineage templates]]

This will make it easy for others to find and use them too.
